Rachel Montague Breaks Record in Triple Jump - Philly Burbs Article

Cherokee's Montague enjoys record night

Records? Cherokee's Rachel Montague doesn't really care about them. Because her own standards are even tougher than the record book.

Montague has two more records that she can not care about. With her 37- 1¾ in the triple jump, she broke both the Burlington County and meet records yesterday at the 37th annual Rowan Invitational.

"The records don't mean anything to me," Montague said. "The mark means more than the record. Something could be a record but not be up to my standards."

Montague broke the Burlington County record of 37-0¼ set in 2003 by Shawnee's Tabatha Haskins and the meet record of 36-9 set in 2005 by West Deptford's Jessica Mills.

Technically, Montague broke her own county triple jump record since she had a 37-0½ earlier in her series. Her winning mark is fourthbest in the state this year and best in South Jersey.

"I'm excited about it," Montague said. "Especially with the conditions. The wind was coming right in my face when I was jumping."

Montague is the first county girl to win the triple jump at this meet since Lenape's Dominique Ward back in 2002, the first year the meet hosted the event.

So if Montague can surpass 37 feet in bad conditions, what will she do later in the season, on a warm day, when she can loosen up properly and not worry about the wind and cold?

"I want to hit 40 feet," she said.

That's a plateau reached by only two girls in state history. Is it possible?

"Anything is possible," she said.

Lenape's shuttle hurdles team also set a meet record, with Lindsay Hardcastle, Lindsey Walsh, Jill Gonzalez and Danielle Ward (Dominique's sister) running 1:02.53. That's No. 6 in South Jersey history, No. 3 in Burlington County history and the fastest time in the state this year.

"We've improved a lot," Gonzales said. "Coach (Gerald) Richardson is our new hurdles coach, and he's changed everything we do, and it's really helped us. We seem to be doing better every time we run."

Indoors, the same group placed fourth at nationals, earning All-America status for each hurdler.

"We really bonded when we went to nationals," Gonzalez said. "When I'm running my leg, I see Dee (Ward) waiting to run and that pushes me. I'm running for my girls. When you're out there competing for your teammates, you want to do your best."

Lenape broke the school record of 1:03.7 they set at Hillsborough a couple weeks ago. The only faster times in county history are Moorestown's 1:02.0 in 1994 and Willingboro's 1:02.1 in 1997.

"We're not even happy with the time," Gonzalez said. "We're happy to get a meet record and school record and third-fastest time in county history, but our goal is 1:01. Third-best is good, but we want to be No. 1 in everything we do."

At the rate they're going, don't be surprised if Lenape breaks the county mark in its last chance - the relay meet at Willingboro the Monday before sectionals.

"We just keep improving every race," said Walsh, the state high jump champ indoors. "We all ran really well today. It's too bad we don't have more chances to run it because we seem to be knocking time off every time we do it."

Seneca won the sprint medley with a school-record 4:11.31, with late replacement Sarah Jochem and Kayla Moody on the 200s, Michelle Brown splitting 55.4 and passing the entire field and Nicole McGrainer anchoring in 2:20.

"Michelle's running unbelievable," McGrainer said. "I can always count on her to pass everyone."

Cherokee and Rancocas Valley placed fifth and sixth in the super sprint medley, and Lenape was second in the sprint medley in 4:16.36. Burlington Township ran 4:11.08 for second in the 1,600- meter relay.

Bordentown senior Stephanie Hazlett placed third in the two-day pentathlon with a score of 2,551 points. Lenape's Ward cleared 5-0 for third place in the high jump.
